The main purpose of the war is to degrade Russia as much as possible so it can be reduced as a threat for a few decades. A secondary purpose might be to serve as an abject lesson to China so they will think long and hard before engaging in military adventures that the world will disapprove of.

Well it is well known, I thought, that Russia & China have severe demographic issues that will solve any risks from them.
But who will deter the USA from military adventures? Methinks no one.
