TSMC's Bullish AI Outlook

Europe’s semiconductor stocks moved higher on Thursday, with ASML Holdings surging to a record high after Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) reported a 35% jump in fourth-quarter profit and signaled plans to boost capital spending by nearly 40% this year.

“We expect our business to be supported by continuous strong demand for our leading-edge process technologies,” Huang said. He said spending would be “significantly higher” in the next three years.

Are Wendell Huang of TSMC and Jensen Huang of Nvidia related?

TSMC earnings and plans make AI correction seem overdone. Tech stocks doing well today.

The adverts on my youtube and other feeds I know feed me ads algoritmically are now flooded (50% or so) with ads for:

getting a quick PhD in AI
courses in mastering “emerging” AI’s much better than what’s on now

I think a desperate surge is underway, or maybe quite a few. Huge investment demands some clue as to how it will all work out.

That’s like asking if Stephen Miller is related to Bode Miller. Huang is sort of a common surname. Fix your Googler.

The “let’s throw a lot of money into this thing and see what she can do” approach is really good for chip makers. I have serious doubts about how well it will work out.

Heck, even the AI companies don’t fully understand what their endgame is. Without a clear goal, the US will keep dumping money into AI until there’s not enough electricity to power data centers. That’s when the bubble bursts.

China seems to be taking the “we know exactly what we want AI to do, and we’ll develop it to meet those ends” approach. Their approach doesn’t suck up so much capital, is more efficient, and is fueled by an oversupply of electricity.

I wonder who will come out on top.

Any time a stock goes up some one asks how long that will last. This is standard Wall Street banter. Sometimes all hot air.

Most believe AI is the next big thing. A few players are expected to dominate. No one wants to be left out. A few must participate to maintain current leadership. Especially Google. They cannot allow Bing or OpenAI to win.

For now companies continue to invest. Earnings are growing nicely. Yes, the future is uncertain.
