**Gilded Age Mansions: How America’s Elite Architects Built Monumental Estates**
_Between the 1860s and the early 1900s, a generation of architects trained in European traditions brought monumental design to the United States, building estates that combined Old World craftsmanship with New World ambition._

# The Rise of the Nine-Figure Listing

_Outside Tampa, a French revivalist property listed for $115 million has a bowling alley with a private 1950s-style diner, a car museum and a go-kart circuit. In Los Angeles, a 70,000-square-foot compound asking $400 million with two houses totaling 39 bedrooms, four kitchens, three swimming pools, a hammam and an airport security-style X-ray machine._

_The age of the nine-figure listing is upon us._

_This year has proved to be a record one for $100 million listings, with more homes listed at or above that supersized price tag than at any other time in history, according to Redfin._

How can you possibly justify living in a house w 39 bedrooms. It has to be a prestige home; an investment. Great place to entertain. But a pain to maintain.

This has to be another aspect of the wealth divide. Lots of ego. Maybe a sharp deal maker.

Never saw the need for more that a 3BR home, but Inlaw has moved on up to 4BR, plus study, office spaces, more places to keep stuff! 4 car garage, I can see if one is a workshop, but 2 cars, boat, do eat space… The monster homes any larger, maybe more full time guests, or kids that never left the nest… It’s another world, full time hired help, etc… Upstairs/Downstairs comes to mind…

I would suggest calling it the Meretricious Age.

Yeah, I had to use the thesaurus to find that one.

Made me look! It’s a crazy time, while we could have moved into a bigger, more expanded home, by that time our kids had moved along, and guests were just weekends or an overnight here n there.. It’s bad enough, packrat that I am, more space would have allowed even more ‘stuff’, now unneeded… My imagination on all that furniture, boggling..
