A bit strange as the housing market seems fairly stable:
Maybe they used a form of leverage that is very sensitive to even small changes in rates? (replying without reading the article)
They bought a portfolio of properties from another company, and they hedged by using interest rate derivatives. They didn’t do a good job hedging because when long rates went up they ended up losing $600 million.
