Waymo robotaxi service bigger, more available than Tesla

That is a good question. How can someone call something FSD when it obviously is not? It’s almost like they either do not know what the acronym means or do not care about accuracy.

Ever hear the quip, “Perfect is the enemy of the good?” Not much sense explaining when you can look it up with Google. It dates back to Voltaire…

That’s the point. The human safety driver prevented the collision.

The collision or ALL collisions? If "all’ collisions then automation is doomed. The collision is a sample of ONE.

All 787s must be grounded immediately! Unsafe even with human safety drivers!

The Captain

Yep I did and the company I know used to run on it till they almost went bankrupt and were sold out to tmobile. That is when they found out the Vin Scully quote " good is not good enough."

A sample of ONE? Nothing else could have been the cause?

The Captain

Well, you are only using a sample of one, and it still hasn’t met its goal of FSD, even though you call it that. Maybe we should just call it AFSD, Almost Full Self Driving. Because, using another Voltaire quote, “Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.”

I’ll end this thread wishing you well investing in Waymo. I have my money on Tesla.

I don’t understand your analogy. Regardless, Tesla disagrees with you and they have the only vote that counts.

Sorry to hear.

Tesla joins an illustrious list. I doubt about the vote count thing. Investors have the vote that counts. Money talks, BS walks.

What exactly do you mean by “its data” here?

This data is “crowdsourced” from random people (random tesla owners) out there (including me) on the internet. It has nothing at all to do with Tesla the company.

Then show me the “Data” that Tesla has, I am sure it would be more reliable.

Tesla has the only vote that counts. Tesla doesn’t believe their L4 technology is good enough to be released. Until they do, they won’t introduce L4 service.

This may upset the shareholders as being “unscientific” but that’s the position that Tesla is in.

Yes, of course. Obviously their data is showing Tesla that they aren’t ready for true autonomous driving. Because if it did, they would do it. Tesla (Musk) has never been shy about just putting new stuff out there as soon as its ready, even before its been “polished”, etc.

Autonomous driving is a tough engineering problem to solve. The first 99% might take time t. The next 0.9% might take time 10t. The next 0.09% might take time 100t. Etc. The biggest question is how many 9s do you need before you can unleash it on the world. This is pretty much the way almost all engineering problems work.

Exactly, and in the meantime Musk states that it is almost here and people believe him. I have no doubt some day somebody will get it. But to keep telling people its almost here and then, reasonable people believe him, and go on sites like this arguing that “Musk says” and he is “a genius”, well it’s starting to be pathetic.

Everything Musk says is “forward looking”, that’s just the kind of guy he is. The interesting thing is that while he delivers everything late, sometimes very late, he actually does deliver a lot of [cool] stuff.

Agreed, but so did Barnum Bailey. I am not taking away from what he has done, but if he was really as transparent as he says he is, then we would all have the numbers we need to compare to other services. It’s the secrecy he has built that makes people leery. Especially people who might invest in his company because it is all built on his word, and he isn’t the most stable individual.

This one is actually a very smart choice right now. It would be folly to devote scarce engineering resources to a $250k vehicle that’ll sell a few thousand units at best. Much smarter to use those scarce engineering resources on things like next gen models and robotaxi. Even the cybertruck is turning into a kind of bust because it isn’t selling anywhere near the numbers it needs to.
