What happened to Voice of America/Radio Free EU

During the Cold War the Free World made use of Anti-Propaganda tools like Radio Free Europe and Voice of America so the question is now why not something similar? Surely we must have the high tech tools to counter Putin’s propaganda.

They were not really needed once the USSR fell apart. So, no funding for them and so on. Plus, with the widespread adoption of the Internet and cell phones (late 1990s and later), they were seen as being replaced by better alternatives.

Radio Free Europe had been broadcasting into Hungary since its creation in 1949. RFE was created in part by the United States CIA along with other nations in Western Europe who feared the spread of Communism. It was created to broadcast unbiased news from the democratic nations, and to inspire the citizens of Eastern Europe to protest against their Communist governments.

In other words stir up subjected people.

West German and French newspapers are publishing charges that Radio Free Europe stirred revolt and kept it going

The Eisenhower government relied upon the CIA organising an anti-communist coup d’état in the Hungarian People’s Republic, which failed because CIA case officers did not know who were the politically reliable anti-communists to arm against the Stalinist Rákosi government supported by the USSR.[43] By 28 October, the day that the Nagy government assumed power, CIA case officer Frank Wisner ordered Radio Free Europe to broadcast false encouragement to the Hungarians, that they continue battling the Hungarian communists and the Red Army until outside help arrived.

Of course, no outside was forth coming. The rebels were mowed down.

1991-a VOA radio message from the president to Iraqis & Kurds in the North of Iraq.
There is another way for the bloodshed to stop: and that is, for the Iraqi military and the Iraqi people to take matters into their own hands and force Saddam Hussein, the dictator, to step aside and then comply with the United Nations’ resolutions and rejoin the family of peace-loving nations

They rose up. Again no outside aid. Again the rebels were mowed down by tanks & helicopters gun ships.

4,366? Out of a Russian population of 145.8 million.

You can see more people at a Jimmy Buffett concert in Boston.

Obviously the anti-Putin on air campaign is having a very limited effect.
