Probably much like outstate Michgan: you have “freeedom”, if you conform. You have “freeedom” to jam your fundy whack religion down everyone else’s throat too.
When I fled Texas for Washington State back in 2006, my health insurance premiums dropped by 60%. Both states lack a state income tax. Sales tax was about the same. And the apartment I rented was actually a little cheaper than the one I left in Houston.

Yes, there are regional differences you should be aware of. Often they are driven by voters choices on who they send to the state legislature. And there can be major differences in attitudes an support for education and a wide variety of social services. Caveat emptor. Yes, rent for a while before you move.

My experience (from graduate school in Oregon years ago) is that produce on the West coast is often cheaper due to savings on shipping. Manufactured goods shipped from the East are often more costly. Labor costs higher. But the West might do very well on imports from Asia.
