how do one find out in advance that an analyst is about to release a report to up or down grade a stock?
to me this has been somewhat random when they make their pronouncements. The rec often seem random too.

I think it is mostly random. You could find out who the analysts are for a particular stock, and follow them, so you’ll know pretty quickly if they just said something about that stock.
I think it may sometimes happen just before monthly options expirations, but I have only recently started noting that mentally.
I have never seen any analyst tip their hand as to a change in rating. That would encourage gaming the system. Imagine if you knew a head of time an influential analyst was going to do an upgrade?
