(Bloomberg) – Americans could be cutting steaks and burgers from their diets as inflation soars, if beef-packer profit margins are any indication.

Estimated profit margins for beef packers fell to $102.45 per head Tuesday.

Franchise owners report that when gas prices rise their sales tend to fade. Teens give first priority to gas in the tank; buy fewer hamburgers.

And then there is sticker shock. The Whopper now goes for $5.50. Hamburger meal close to $10.

Looks like chicken sandwiches will be popular for a while.
