Russia’s largest lender, Sberbank, said on Wednesday it was considering increasing loan-loss provisions after Ukrainian drone attacks on e-commerce giant Wildberries’ warehouses hit the finances of online retailers and their suppliers.
Clever tactics by Ukraine as massive warehouses are difficult to defend and easy to find. Also, these attacks are very expensive for the Russian economy:
Rebuilding Wildberries’ warehouses and other infrastructure destroyed in Ukrainian drone attacks could cost the online retailer between 147 billion and 223 billion rubles, > Sergei Semko, lead analyst at the Data Insight research agency, told Forbes Russia. If the retailer has to fully demolish the damaged buildings, clear the debris, and reclaim the land, the cost could climb to between 169 billion and 278.9 billion rubles, he said.
Semko put sellers’ potential losses on Wildberries at 445-507.8 billion rubles.
It has been reported from several sources that the goods are effectively uninsured:
Tatyana Kim, the founder of Russian marketplace Wildberries, has said that UAV strikes constitute force majeure, meaning losses of goods are not subject to compensation.
Most of the traders using Wildberries are small businesses who have been suffering generally due to Russia efforts to pay for the war:
Some 209,000 small and medium-sized businesses closed in Russia between January and March 2026 — nearly 9% more than in the same period of 2025, Forbes Russia reported, citing data from the business analytics service Kontur.Focus. Russia has a total of 6.9 million such businesses.
I watched a Youtube video on this just last night. A couple months ago, Wildberries insurance company declared drone attacks were a force majeure, and so no insurance for you.
Nobody thinks that bombing the Amazon warehouses of Russia is going to “win the war.”
It’s a small part of the long range strategy of trying to bring the war home to the Russian people, who - except for drafting their sons - have been largely immune to its effects, unlike the Ukrainian people.
It’s clear Ukraine is never going to “win” a war against Russia by invading it and taking territory, so they have to get outside the traditional way of fighting and try to get Russia to give up. While it’s not a perfect analogy, it’s what Iran is doing with the Strait to bring home the cost of our war-of-choice in their country: by making Americans feel the pain at the pump.
Our response, from the beginning, now, and forever seems to be “We haven’t dropped enough bombs yet.” Yours too.
There are some instructive lessons here. Russia has been attack the Ukrainian power grid for three and a half years now, and Ukraine has not surrendered. One problem is that by design power grids are decentralized and redundant so it is hard to take them offline permanently.
So our Sec. of War (snicker) sees this, engages his galaxy-sized brain, and decides the best way to make Iran surrender is to bomb their power grid. Nobody can figure out why it didn’t work.
Another lesson is that Ukraine isn’t trying to get Russia to surrender. It is trying to make the war expensive enough that Russia will come to the negotiating table.
Iran is doing the same thing. They’d like the war to be over, but as long as they control the Strait they keep US gas prices nice and high, which helps stoke inflation, which keeps interest rates high, which slows down the economy…
…I wonder if we’ll figure this out at some point. Nah.
Leap, I have been commenting and linking on this since the Orange movement and the totalitarian insanity triggering revolution led by youngsters onthe Maidan Square, some of whom I knew. I will risk suggesting that you “get a grip” and a bit more civility in your posting?
You are being literal. It makes your writing impactful but offbase. It is not the bomb. It is the economic impact on Russia. It further degrades their economy.
This place would be in full agreement if I did that, but it seems we do not control the entire three branches of government nor the pentagon or FED. Brace yourselves for some reality.
The principle of what a waste of life these human follies are does not have exceptions, but reality is biting.
Reality 10k missiles were launched by Hamas into Israel prior to the war. Hamas would never again hold elections. 50% of the West Bank is not Palestinian nor stolen from Palestinians, but Israel has very few votes in the UN.
If the UN told the US what it could and could not do? Why is Israel the only country being told by the UN what to do and not do?
Shouldn’t Saudi Arabia be told by 2035 only half or less of their oil supply by volume should be produced to stop global warming? Don’t we have better things for the UN to do?

The Iran US war is saving the planet. Chew on that. 20% of the world’s oil supply has stopped. People world wide are going electric. Alternative energy is coming in faster.

Think about this, we need the inflation from this war. The chinese have had 10 quarters of deflation. Things will be a lot worse when or if we have deflation.
It will be interesting to see how this war goes forward as Ukraine now has little air defense. In July Ukraine was intercepting 90% of Russian drones & missiles. Now 15%.
Why? No air defense missiles. The US is using them in the middle East to protect US bases & Israel.
