X and Bluesky update

Bluesky opened to the public in February 2024. There were those who thought the Bluesky platform would grow to the sky (and supplant X/Twitter). For an update I checked Google for the number of active daily users.

  • Bluesky currently has an estimated 1.5 to 3.6 million daily active users.
  • X (formerly Twitter) has an estimated 250 million daily active users.

Since X pretends to be advertising supported, a more relevant look excludes those accounts which are meaningless to US advertisers:

X has an estimated ****21 million daily active mobile users**** in the United States, along with about 140 million daily visitors to its web platform. The United States represents X's largest national market, hosting roughly 104 million total monthly users

Of interest:

Threads boasts approximately **150 million** daily active users worldwide. Notably, the platform has surpassed Elon Musk's X in mobile daily active users globally, recording roughly 141.5 million daily mobile users compared to X's 125 million

Personally I did not expect Bluesky to overtake Twitter, nee X, as as getting to critical mass without some sort of ancillary help is devilishly hard now that the field has matured and has many options. I will say it’s also hard to kill one, as the travails of Facebook show, now overwhelmed with ads, tinged by “your grandma’s social media” and worse, and yet it keeps chugging along.

PS: X is still losing tons of money. It was purchased for $44 billion. Accumulated losses and stain of reputation now value it at roughly $10 billion for the service itself; add back in another $10-$20 billion for the possible (over)valuation of xAI and it’s still a huge loser.
