Zap Energy, a fusion energy start-up working on a low-cost path to producing electricity commercially, said last week that it had taken an important step toward testing a system its researchers believe will eventually produce more electricity than it consumes.

That point is seen as a milestone in solving the world’s energy challenge while it moves away from fossil fuels. An emerging global industry composed of almost three dozen start-ups and heavily funded government development projects is pursuing a variety of concepts. Zap Energy, based in Seattle, stands out because its approach — if it works — would be simpler and cheaper than what other companies are doing.

I’m reminded of Blacklight Power in Cranbury (actually East Windsor) NJ. After the cold fusion fiasco, they continued to believe they could make it work. Made lots of claims.

Now they are called Brilliant Light Power. Article says numerous news releases claimed new equipment coming soon but never materialized.

When I lived in NJ they were hiring. The whisper was if you ever put them on your resume, your career in science was over.

Cold fusion was a remarkably mysterious source of energy that proved not to scale. It was done by reputable scientists but apparently the data were an aberration. Meanwhile they did this in a dishpan while physicists were spending millions on fancy tokamaks. Their results received careful scrutiny.

We also had the “polywater” fiasco in the same time frame. Scientists concluded that water could be polymerized to a solid under certain conditions. Mostly when drained from glass capillary tubes. People feared the oceans would solidify if the magical catalyst escaped. But alas it was an experimental error. The solid was a silicate that came from the glass that tested as water.
