My Story
My background is actually behavioral psychology : managed group homes and counseled kids , Special Olympics. Then i was a landlord doing property management for years… 20 years. Now 70 years young, My wife is a Financial advisor so we chat about portfolio building daily. Raising the family and sending the 2 boys off to college, we didn’t get interested in actually investing until the turn of the century , her background in banking, mortgage lending and insurance.

MDP Weekly: Cabincruser’s Winning Formula By Ron Gross August 23, 2010 … I’m thrilled to introduce the latest subject of our MDP member profile series: Kevin C., a.k.a. cabincruser on our discussion boards. This Fool is a constant spark in the MDP community, which wouldn’t be the same without his experience and wit.
Ron: Kevin, you have a fascinating life story. Can you tell me a little about yourself? What happened to you when you were 18, and how did it affect and shape your life? Kevin: The summer after high school, I survived a gunshot to the face. I lost an eye, and I learned about forgiveness — and not to let setbacks distract me from my goals. I earned a degree in behavioral psychology from the University of Vermont, and my career involved pharmacology research, developing and managing group homes, youth counseling, and advocating for people with disabilities. By the turn of the century, my wife and I invested in income properties and raised two sons, the youngest now a junior at Bryant University (go Bulldogs!). I am now semi-retired and will turn 58 next month.

Ron: Wow, that’s not your everyday childhood. It must have been very difficult, but your perseverance is inspiring. Moving onto the world of investing, you describe one of your investing strategies as “trading around a core position.”
Ron: As someone who’s been with MDP from the start, what do you like most about being part of our service? Kevin: I came to MDP to learn about building a portfolio; when to buy, hold, or sell; and diversification and weighting of positions and sectors, along with a real-life portfolio partner to ride alongside. What I have come to like the most, however, is getting to compare notes with so many other interested investors. MDP feels like a real-life investing classroom where everyone is sharing their experiences at whatever level.
Ron: Have you learned any investing lessons from the market’s tumble in 2008 and the rebound in 2009? Kevin: After 2008, I learned to hold companies with solid fundamentals and dividends; to actively manage diversity and risk; and to buy in increments.
