20% of GDP in 2032: Health care's Macroeconomic impact

The point is innocent people are losing their lives to corporations deciding lives are expendable.

No need to be so negative. Try:

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

Frederic Bastiat explained it brilliantly

The entire difference between a bad and a good Economist is apparent here. A bad one relies on the visible effect while the good one takes account both of the effect one can see and of those one must foresee .

What is seen and what is not seen

A.K.A. Unintended consequences.

Do a thought experiment. If there is an epidemic today that did not exist 100 years ago, how likely is it to be caused by the loss of will power by the people? And if there is increasing loss of will power, what are the drivers?

The good news is that the truth of the matter is being made public by increasing numbers of healthcare professionals.

Well, I doubt folk have less willpower than a century or so ago…most folk just didn’t need to exercise it quite so much back then. Had there been a fast food joint on every corner, and access to cheap hyperpalatable food, there’d be plenty of excess bodyfat on display.

The Boomers were raised during a period of American prosperity and ascendancy and got fat. The parents of the Boomers were raised during the Great Depression and WWII and did not get fat. If hardship and challenges build discipline and character then I can see why Boomers and later generations might be more lazy and self-indulgent.

From famine to feat? Yes!

Did they gorge on the same kinds of foods or did the food supply change?

Governments telling people what to eat because in the time of plenty food was too expensive

In 1974, the first food pyramid was presented to the public with the following message: “A good, healthy diet at a reasonable price”.

This pyramid was made up of 3 parts:

  • The base included basic foodstuffs considered essential to the individual’s wellbeing: cereals, dairy products, pasta and potatoes.
  • The centre and top of the pyramid represented complementary food providing the vitamins and minerals not found in basic foodstuffs.
  • Fruit and vegetables were placed at the centre, with meat, fish and eggs on top.

How the ideology of low fat conquered america

By the 1960s, the low-fat diet began to be touted not just for high-risk heart patients, but as good for the whole nation. After 1980, the low-fat approach became an overarching ideology, promoted by physicians, the federal government, the food industry, and the popular health media.

Are you sure about that? I remember “food pyramid” illustrations when I was in grade school. In 74, I was in college, and well past being indoctrinated by ag industry propaganda.

I can’t say with certainty when I think the food pyramid illustrations first appeared. But, for sure, post-1986 when we came to the US, I do recall the cartoon representations on the back of cereal boxes (which is what most folk are acquainted with) …and noting the difference between them and the actual food pyramid. And also noting how little impact they both appeared to have on the typical eating habits around at the time.

The thing about all this “recall” of Days or Yore is there’s a heck of a lot of historical revisionism and even False Memory Syndrome at play. Just in case, here’s a reasonable looking time line (can neither confirm nor deny from personal experience)…

Like I’ve said many times, the internet is a risky place to navigate without adult supervision. Kinda like tiptoeing through a field of steaming cow pats…blindfold.

Healthcare spending is projected to outpace GDP growth, reaching 19.7 percent by 2032, up from 17.3 percent in 2022. This increase is due to higher healthcare utilization, with 93.1 percent of the population insured. Medicare will play a larger role in healthcare payments as the population ages, affecting the profitability of healthcare providers.
