Batteries are at the heart of EVs. Tesla was the first (or one of the first) to switch from lead acid to lithium ion batteries. Back then the available cells were designed for consumer electronics, mainly laptops and cell phones. The 4680 is the first cylindrical cell designed for EVs. I stress ‘cylindrical’ because Sandy Munro has pointed out the benefits of this form factor as it enables building a structural battery pack. The cells morph from cargo to structure lowering the weight of the vehicle and lowering the manufacturing cost.
The linked video is rather technical but the conclusions are investment grade.
4680 Teardown Analysis // DBE: Big Risks & Big Rewards + Patent Landscape
The is the second video of the 4680 Teardown Series. Tesla DBE is Tesla’s revolutionary Dry Battery Electrode coating technology for battery cell production. Tesla took a big risk with DBE but it has the potential for big rewards. I’ll also cover the Patent landscape and bear, base, and bull cases for the technology.
