The Captain
David Ellison, head of CBS’s parent Paramount Skydance, has been an acquisition frenzy, including a blockbuster proposed acquisition of Warner Brothers Discovery (WBD). This acquisition raised major anti-trust red flags, and the US DOJ appeared poised to block it, until Ellison began meeting with senior government officials, at which point the DOJ suddenly reversed course and approved it without reservation (European regulators are still investigating). Shortly after, Weiss began firing top reporters and producers that supposedly had reported on the White House in an unflattering light. Weiss also spiked at least one 60 Minutes story because it did not contain an interview with White House aide Stephen Miller. WBD owns CNN, which is part of the anti-trust concern.
CBS has been left leaning for years. I see nothing wrong w having right leaning investigative reporting.
Have you noticed a change at 60 Minutes? Yes, some reporters are leaving. This is mostly PR. So far no difference in content.
The issue isn’t left or right reporting. The issue is reporting being slanted to favor the government in exchange for political favors. The common term for this is “corruption.”
And “slanting” reporting to try not to offend govt follows directly from libel law suits that result in big legal bills and/or expensive settlements.
Toning it down a bit is good business if you hope to survive. Every network probably has libel guidelines and a department that reviews scripts and programs. And you are not surprised that some make suggested edits or people to interview to reduce risk.
Trump is expert at applying leverage. The response is what he wanted.
CBS has a keen understanding of libel law. That’s not why they are doing this. They are doing this because they want political favors.
It used to be called investigative reporting…period. If I’m remembering correctly, Woodward and Berntstein weren’t labeled as left leaning investigative journalists. Nowadays, the duped dummies think anything critical of their side must not be true.
Our freedom of the press is intended to hold those in power accountable. We should all be concerned when the “news” no longer fulfills this very critical role in our democracy.
I agree, he’s a very good extortionist.
Fox Network, or Fox News the cable channel, could have done this at any point over the last 20+ years. I think that they’ve found that investigative reporting on a right-leaning view doesn’t produce results they are looking for. But opinion pieces from opinion hosts unbounded by the need to actually investigate does.
This is nothing but an attempt by Trump to silence anyone who exposes the harm he is doing. Don’t kid yourself.
If a far left socialist Billionaire bought up Fox Corporation and Comcast and immediately fired 35 lead journalists, CEOs, Editors and Producers at FoxNews and it was walked through the DoJ under Biden we’d never here the end of it.
Benghazi Benghazi Benghazi
Its hard to compare CBS and Fox. They have very different image, very different audience, and viewers have very different expectations.
Remember Rush Limbaugh? Was he right leaning? On the radio. Not too political.
Remember Paul Harvey?
What are you talking about? This is bonkers.
Is this real? Rush Limbaugh? He was a reactionary ideologue. And a despicable human being.
