After the bump comes the crash

Looks like that exemption on tariffs is only going to be 30 days.

KARL: You’re saying that big tariffs on things like laptops & all those iPhones built in China, they’re temporarily off but they’re gonna be coming right back in a month?

LUTNICK: Correct. That’s right. Semiconductors & pharmaceuticals will have a tariff model in order to encourage them to reshore

Who knows right?

No one knows, not even the very top.

The tariffs that have apparently stuck, on steel, aluminum, and cars, is 25%. Bet the electronics tariff runs about the same. Big enough to throw off lots of revenue for the government, but not so big that people run away from the stores without buying anything.

A basic 65" ChiCom TCL or Hisense TV at Best Buy runs about $340. A Mexican built Samsung or LG runs a bit more, still under $400. Sets from the same companies, with a lot of extra bells and whistles, run over a grand. Bump the price of a basic TCL 25%, from $340 to $425, and it is still a lot cheaper than the more elaborate models.

Rhetorical questions:
How much does a USA made TV cost?

What company has announced that it is going to build TVs in the USA because of tariffs?

Our Very Stable Genius won’t know until his (rather ample) gut tells him what to do.

Trick question, because no-one builds the components in the US. As posted a couple days ago, Element Electronics final assembles TVs in South Carolina, They’re pretty cheap too.

This 43" Element is available near where I live. $180 is pretty competitive.

Foxconn promised, really and truly, they would built flat panel displays, in Wisconsin. The taxpayers of that state are still waiting on them.

The next step would then to persuade someone, like Jabil Circuit, to build up the boards, in one of their US plants.

That was why it was rhetorical.

I’m lost.

But I’m sure customs has all of the terms and pauses and reversals in a spreadsheet or something.

I have a feeling that this will be the theme for the next 3 years and 8 months.

I’m going to take good notes, travel back in time and write a “fictional” novel called “2025.”

This reality is crazier than any fiction.

Apologies Mr. Orwell.

Some quotes from WSJ editorial.

Exemptions, pauses, reversals mean that what constitutes our national emergency changes daily, apparently.

We are all playing the part of Lou Costello.

Dear PF,

The markups are high but that does not mean the retail pos has much of a margin.

This is all just a game of red light green light to this administration.
