Looks like that exemption on tariffs is only going to be 30 days.
KARL: You’re saying that big tariffs on things like laptops & all those iPhones built in China, they’re temporarily off but they’re gonna be coming right back in a month?
LUTNICK: Correct. That’s right. Semiconductors & pharmaceuticals will have a tariff model in order to encourage them to reshore
The tariffs that have apparently stuck, on steel, aluminum, and cars, is 25%. Bet the electronics tariff runs about the same. Big enough to throw off lots of revenue for the government, but not so big that people run away from the stores without buying anything.
A basic 65" ChiCom TCL or Hisense TV at Best Buy runs about $340. A Mexican built Samsung or LG runs a bit more, still under $400. Sets from the same companies, with a lot of extra bells and whistles, run over a grand. Bump the price of a basic TCL 25%, from $340 to $425, and it is still a lot cheaper than the more elaborate models.
Trick question, because no-one builds the components in the US. As posted a couple days ago, Element Electronics final assembles TVs in South Carolina, They’re pretty cheap too.
This 43" Element is available near where I live. $180 is pretty competitive.
