Hertz has a long history of screwing their customers. And they screw their customers both purposely, and inadvertently via incompetence. They even sent some completely innocent customers to jail a while back.
Whenever I have a choice, I will avoid renting from them. I’ve had mostly good luck with Avis over the decades. And sometimes I’ll rent from the second tier companies that usually have somewhat lower prices.

Hertz has overcharged me, and left me without a car. In turn, I’ve bombed them with letters and threatened to report them to the local district attorney, Better Business Bureau, and airport licensing boards. They refunded me and gave me a lifetime ban. I think we’re both happier with that result.
