Australia, electric rates falling due to battery storage

Heads up—just saw a report that Australian electricity rates are actually falling because of solar plus storage. The time arbitrage mechanism is working exactly as expected. Batteries are shifting solar generation to peak demand hours and flattening the price curve. This is what we should see everywhere as storage scales.

Looking at the average electricity bills by state, since 2022 they have all gone up by 8-10%. Either rates haven’t gone down or its the Jevons paradox.

New South Wales +10%
Victoria +8
Queensland +10
South Australia +7
Western Australia +8
Tasmania +10
Canberra +10

Looking at just the last few months (Nov-Apr) bills in New South Wales (the most populous state) the average paid was up 4.3%.

Google tells me that “Average electricity prices in Australia are experiencing significant upward pressure, with rates rising from around 25 cents/kWh in 2020 to over 35 cents/kWh in 2026.”

I do not know about Australian electric rates. But the benefits of energy storage are Very True. That is why energy storage is now in second place for new electrical interconnections on the PJM grid.

According to Statistics Austria, inflation in Austria fell to 2.0% year over year in January 2026, and energy prices declined by 4.9% year over year; within the housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels category, electricity prices fell 8.2% year over year, and electricity alone reduced the inflation rate by 1.0 percentage point Statistics Austria January 2026 inflation release. In its flash estimate, Statistics Austria stated that the decline in energy prices reflected the end of the electricity base effect, lower energy taxes effective in January 2026, and reduced subsidies Statistics Austria flash estimate. A contemporaneous Xinhua report summarized the same official figures, likewise noting that Austria’s January inflation rate was 2.0% and that energy prices were down 4.9% year over year Xinhua report.

We might be looking different time frames. Battery deployments wouldn’t have a made difference except very recently.

That is correct. Batteries were mainly in China and USA before 2022.

How much of that is inflation?

Or countries …

Many years ago when we were in Austria I picked up a t-shirt that had an outline map of the country superimposed upon the picture of a kangaroo.
