Increasingly, the OEMs are trying to cut the dealers out, so the OEM grabs all the loot. Typically, warranty work pays peanuts to a dealer service department, so, the OEMs apparently find it profitable to build shoddy cars. A couple years ago, VW “improved” the engine used in the Jetta and Taos. Those “improved” engines started blowing head gaskets in 10-15,000 miles. Didn’t VW test those “improvements” at all, before putting them into production? I read over the TSB that VW issued, a year after the “improved” engines started production. The though crosses my mind: did they really resolved the issue, so the gasket lasts 200.000 miles, or did they only improve it enough to last out the warranty?
