That’s the new electric model. The robots operated by hydraulics seemed to move much quicker.

Well, those are utterly amazing.

Needs the music… They need to give the robot a sense of rhythm.

It’s astonishing if it can watch someone dancing and replicate the steps. It’s slightly less amazing if it takes days or weeks to carefully program it to produce the movement.

The promise of robots is “replace humans”. A nearly untrained human can stand on a production line and turn a wrench (Henry Ford) or stand at a station while Kiva or other robots bring racks to them to be picked and put in boxes at an Amazon warehouse. Both of those functions have been improved from where they started, but there are still humans in the chain because, well, robots can’t do it yet.

When they can, it’ll be something. It’s not, not yet. They still toddlers on the timeline of Full Human Replacement. I’m sure it will get there, but it’s still a ways away.

Correct. I considered an automated parts system for a business being considered. Totally custom–and I knew it. Volume use would easily justify the cost. Key point was it was not to replace workers–but to automate the order-fulfillment process with the least number of workers. Amazon isn’t there yet–maybe eventually…

Yet. I’ve been in a few Amazon FC’s and it is surprising how few humans are involved. And apparently getting fewer.

I prefer this one:

I think that this was done about four years ago. It is interesting to note how slimmer and more agile the robots have become.

For some applications, yes. But for others it can be to amplify what a human can do. Maybe the robot helps the human by doing the heavy lifting and/or repetitive tasks and the human does other tasks, including making sure the robot does the right thing(s).

Fine. It’s still “if it need to be programmed for specific actions” a world away from “can help a human at any random task when needed”.
