A rather gloomy but reasonably accurate view of Britain’s economy:
THE British government is living beyond its means. At some point, it will lose lenders, and be forced to cut services, more suddenly and more deeply than in the 2010s. This trend used to be measured in decades. Now fiscal collapse is expected within a few years. Much sooner, some say.
Maybe sell the Hebrides Islands to petro/gas wealthy Norway as (yet another) temporary expedient, and use the funds to help soften the cost of doing crucial reforms. Then sell off other odds and ends like stately homes, old marble bits from earlier conquests (let Qatar or UAE or SA buy the Elgin Marbles and give them as a gift to poor old Greece), etc..
The Crown Jewels would probably attract nearly hysterical bidding….
This is an interesting piece, all the more so because I read the exact same prediction even with the identical wording (“Britain on the brink”) back in the 1970’s. They had the same symptoms, the same breathy predictions, the same foreboding of disaster.
And I’m sure eventually they will be right, because no one can live beyond their means forever. Someday, heck, the sun will expand and consume us all, so there’s that.
Meanwhile, big wheel keeps on turnin’.
There are more, lots more. There’s always been a guy walking around with a sandwich board shouting “The End Is Near!”. As I say, someday he’ll be right.
