A high-grade manganese deposit (highest grade yet found in the US) is located in northern MN, about 50 miles west of Duluth. It starts about 300+ feet underground. Be interesting to see what proposals are made to mine it. All manganese is currently imported into the US. Another mine is already being contructed in AZ.
