I don’t think Mexico or Canada voted for him!

The people who will suffer are those that pay higher prices because of the tariffs, and workers who lose their jobs because consumers refuse to pay higher prices and do without, or find a product substitute.

The US auto industry already has problems selling cars at current pricing. They also get lots of auto parts from both Canada and Mexico. Auto makers will either have to eat the higher prices for parts, or lay-off union workers due to decreasing demand.

On a bit of a tangent, this thread SOOO reminded me of Jedi (ol’ school board members will get that reference). He often drove me batty with his constant desire for Schadenfreude.

I think I have come to better appreciate and understand Jedi. Maybe he was wiser than I gave him credit.

Optics. To look like one is doing something about a problem. The reality is that the solution is going after employers that hire illegals.

And the first step in actually doing that very obvious and effective solution would be to create a national identity system that functions securely and effectively so that employers have no excuse.

This no-ID racket has been run now for decades. The last time their was a proposal to actually have ID’s that can serve that (and many other functions) those making the most use of illegal workers stirred up religious fringes into a fine froth by shrieking that national ID’s are what is meant by the “666” embossed on people in the Book of Revelations.

Sigh.

The anti-government conspiracy nuts have an apoplectic fit at the mention of a “national ID card” for USians. A mandatory ID for immigrants is a different matter. Some years ago, there was a proposal to implement such an ID program. All employers would need to check the ID against a national database. Of course, as ideology dictates everything be privatized, the proposal was that the data base, and verification of IDs, would be outsourced to the credit card companies, at government expense.

There is E-Verify but it can be easily circumvented.

The 666 children separated from their parents and families were to be used to do (what?) relevant to the Book of Revelations? Who needs 666 of anything? Right? LOL !!! Book of Revelations, so it must be a religious thing.

Here is a brief summary

and here is the relevant Bible quote from Revelations 6:16-18

“16 … forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.

18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666.

(charmingly, the “WWW” that begins all internet addresses translates numerologically to 666.)

666 child sacrifices to Satan to appease his Master(s). Matches up fairly well, IMO.

Ebrard said the proposed tariffs would hit the automotive sector’s top cross-border export firms especially hard, namely Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, and push up vehicle prices for consumers by thousands of dollars.

Mexico is the United States’ top trade partner and its automotive industry is the country’s most important manufacturing sector, exporting predominantly to the United States. It represents nearly 25% of all North American vehicle production.

Analysts at Barclays said they estimate proposed 25% tariffs against Canadian and Mexican imports “could wipe out effectively all profits” from the Detroit three automakers.

Keep in mind, the big three will be looking at writing off most/all their investment in EVs, due to the new posse being openly EV-hostile. My suspicion is the tariff will be used to give the big three cover to raise prices to cover the EV write offs, plus, a lot.

Steve

EVs are small potatoes compared to the need for air conditioning all over the US. Used to be made in US. Now made in Mexico. Remember? Much hot air, zero jobs saved. Now there will be a 25% tariff on those “essential” imports that can no longer be made in the US because the people who made them are long gone.

He’s still active on a spin off site from The Transition, and still deep in the Schadenfreude. Maybe deeper than ever - incomprehensible most of the time.
