I was thinking of breaking my addiction to turbo tax and looked at the IRS Direct File program. From what I read, I cannot use Direct File if I took a distribution from my traditional IRA or a distribution from my 403. Everyone else come to the same conclusion?
I know nothing except what I just looked up and found here. Which matches what you said.
Thanks for responding, RH, how have you been? Our son-in-laws parents live in eastern CT, not all that far from Sandy Hook. We get out there once in a while, maybe we can tie in for lunch sometime if you live in that area. A few years ago, we did tie in with Ira and his significant other at a small jazz club in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, it seems he has fallen off the map, never been able to reach him on his phone, and it has been a few years since he has posted on here. I did get out with my local fire department on several of the large fires this summer. But our department did send an engine down to the LA area, sans me. Yes, the ones that went are half my ageā¦but it does hurt to not go. Thanks again for responding, Iāll probably end up paying Turbo Tax again. Go Huskies
Thanks for the link @RHinCT !
I would suggest freetaxusa.com Federal filing is free and state filing costs about as much as the other tax programs charge to file state returns, in some cases less.
Not exactly the same. I would point out that Direct File is only usable in about half of the states, and all of your income must have come from that state. So if you live in one of the other states or you have income from multiple states, you canāt use it. You can check which states are eligible here State | Direct File | Internal Revenue Service
As far as using Direct File when you have distributions from retirement plans, it depends. Currently, any type of retirement plan distribution would prevent you from using Direct File. But per the website Savings And Retirement | Direct File | Internal Revenue Service starting in March, 2025, you will be able to use Direct File for āmost distributionsā from employer sponsored plans like your 403(b). However, distributions from Traditional IRAs still wonāt be supported.
So depending on exactly what type of income you had, you may be able to use Direct File.

Thanks for responding, AJ. Our son lives in Spokane, and he has scouted out a prime huckleberry area, about a two mile hike in. Easy to pick a gallon or two in a day. We are planning on a trip in late August, if that interests you and you want to tie in. (He also somehow managed to pick enough thimbleberries to make a nice liqueur out of them). We also got a copy of āThereās Treasure Insideā and will spend some time trying to figure out where Jon Collins-Black hid the four treasure chests. Thanks again for responding.
That sounds great, except Iām on the other side of the state, about 6 or 7 hours from Spokane. If youāre ever on the Olympic Peninsula, let me know.

Amtrak leaves Seattle every day, with a stop in Spokane
Sandy Hook isnāt all that far from me (in the western part of CT), so that sounds fine. Iām getting along fine, just a retired old fart.
Ooopsā¦I meant western CT, not eastern. my bad. Since 98% of the US is east of me, I just seem to automaticly say eastern when I mean to say western.
Sorry, with no traffic (an unusual occurrence), I live 2 1/2 hours away from the Seattle Amtrak station. When I drive to Spokane, I go around the south end of the Sound and bypass Seattle completely.
