Earthquake Brace & Bolt

Being a Northern Californian, eathquake insurance has been an increasing cost issue, so I applied, received an award, and today sent out requests for bids… Thought it was for th 5 locals, but my inbox shows that 17 requests went out… But this evening I see I have 3 replies come back for more info…

Program has closed for now, but maybe will be funded down the line…

I included a sketch I did long ago, but updated recently when we had plumbing done that required removing all the asbestos wrapped ducting and then the fix, then replacing them, should be handy… https://ibb.co/k4qWWxz

I had applied years ago, somehow it was cancelled, so I had to reapply, and so far it looks like a winner, just the hassle of getting it done…

one more thing out of the way, soon, hopefully …

Out here in New Madrid fault country earthquake insurance is easy to get and not very expensive. But policies are $30K deductible and have limited coverage.

Lets hope none of us ever has reason to collect.

Fire insurance rates are way up, now earthquake, but if this brace & bolt is done, at least maybe less damage, but I remember earlier shakers where I began other the squeal of nails being pulled out… I have to check with my CFO, DW, but I think it cuts the rate, or we can just drop it…

With all new ducting I hate to have all the turmoil under there, maybe have my furnace guy involved, too… I haven’t been under there in many years, if only I was 20 years younger and skinnier again! I went through after moving in, removing all the wood scraps, doing a general cleanup… But that was in the '70s, '80s… Went down one more time in the '90s, adobe was wet, slippery, I got claustrophobic, in the rush to get back up n out, tore up my shoulder… So I let others deal with it now…

Made me look!

he New Madrid Seismic Zone, sometimes called the New Madrid Fault Line, is a major seismic zone and a prolific source of intraplate earthquakes in the Southern and Midwestern United States, stretching to the southwest from New Madrid, Missouri. The New Madrid fault system was responsible for the 1811–12 New Madrid earthquakes, and has the potential to produce large earthquakes in the future. Since 1812, frequent smaller earthquakes have been recorded in the area.

Yes, we have minor rumblings abt once per year. But nothing major. River flooding (and levies) are far more common here. Tornados.

In 1811 they say shaking went on for 40 minutes followed by after shocks for months. Was felt as far away as Ohio. Its in David McCulloughs Pioneers book abt Marietta, OH.

In Japan they do the opposite. They don’t brace and bolt, they use relatively complex joints that float. Some of the structures have persevered for hundreds of years with this scheme. The one time I was in Japan I saw some of these.

The New Madrid earthquake is supposed to have reversed the flow of the Mississippi for a time.

There’s also a major fault under NYC. It hasn’t moved in a long time, but if/when it does the buildings there aren’t built to the same codes as in California.

Ahh, well, we live in what we have, built here in the '60s, so have to deal with it’s shortcomings, modify as is feasible…

1st contractor just left, took a look in the crawlspace, saw app the flex ducting, and promptly declined to even bid… He knows his guys would tear up the ducting to get in and around… So one down… An open easy guy to talk with, sorry to lose him, but will keep his contact information for possible other work in the future… Many common interests… He did mention https://boltdownthebayarea.com as another possibility…

Another lady contactor is going to call, come by later today, once she’s done with another in Sonoma… Talking on the phone, seemed very competent, knowledgeable, hopefully she sees solutions…

Another contractor is scheduled for 0800 on 5/11/22, a very early time for us, but we’ll deal with it…

So several responses… Hopefully solutions…

OK the lady came on 4/29, looked around/under, liked what she saw, and they returned a bid of $5200…

Today, another local fellow came by @ 8 AM, had to get up early! Anyway, he looked around, under, will follow up with a bid… Soon I hope, but he guesstimated $5-6K, and like the other folks, they do all the paperwork, permits, etc…

So now we wait…

I had one other that was interested, I filled out their online forms, sent my sketch, but they didn’t set a site visit date, so I called back, the office manager apologized, thought she had sent me an email, but in the end they declined to bid, they are overbooked with other work, don’t think they could meet the EBB timeline…

So down to two… Like them both, as far as the estimators, so we’ll see how it shakes out…
