EV Insurance Cost

Most mechanics do not work on electrical. They won’t touch a hybrid or an EV.

This comparison would be a better read comparing hybrid costs to EV costs.

Not suggesting this is wrong but wondering if this is a true apples-to-apples comparison. If the average ICE being repaired is a $25K Honda Accord and that is being compared to the $50K Model Y or the $100K Lightning then it doesn’t seem legitimate. I bet you would see the same cost difference comparing the repair of a BMW to that of a Kia.

It didn’t come with a dashcam pre-installed??? Doesn’t it need a camera up there anyway for the “lane keep assist” feature???

Oh Lord Almighty. An EV is just a car, sure it uses batteries and motors instead of gasoline and engines, but it* still has a standard 12V power supply, and it still has 12V power lines all over the place that can be tapped for power. And all an aftermarket dashcam needs is power. The rest it does on its own with its own memory card. If he is so afraid, talk to the installer and tell him you are willing to connect it to one of the USB power outlets if he can mostly hide the wires.

* Yes, there is one EV that uses a 48V system, but that’s new and I bet it also has plenty of 12V power sources available.

This is absolutely the correct solution. Unfortunately, in the USA, we tend to try all the other solutions first, especially the ones that provide lots of political patronage money. I happen to have worked on V2V projects for about 5 years a while back. The feckless automakers and corrupt politicians let it die on the vine because it was worth more to the politicians dead than alive. And the automakers were just feckless, as usual, and essentially gave up RF spectrum that was hugely valuable … because they are feckless.

…and I saw the same when I was advising politicians in California on long term urban and transportation planning. The buckets of treasure being poured into a high speed rail line connecting sparsely populated parts of the central valley is a classic result of your observation.

And in Australia…

A study of 12 insurers carried out by comparison site Compare the Market, has shown the top five best-selling electric vehicles (EVs) are 43% more expensive to cover than similar internal combustion-engined models…

Similarly, the most popular hybrid vehicle are typically 5% pricier for comprehensive car insurance compared to their petrol-only counterparts.

More expense cars cost more to insure.

I checked with State Farm on what it would cost me to insure a used Tesla Model Y AWD. I just have liability, no collision, comp, uninsured motorist, etc.

They told me that the 6-month premium of $162 I’m currently paying on a 20-year old NIssan Altima wouldn’t change with the purchase of the Tesla.

Also interesting that Altima’s are stolen much more frequently than Teslas. Good thing mine is a 5-speed manual transmission

Teslas can’t really be stolen per se. Because they are useless without an authenticating device (smartphone, key card, etc). And even if you do get hold of a way to authenticate, they can be remotely controlled (turned on/off, speed limited, valet mode, etc), and location tracked, by the owner with their own smartphone.

Our 2024 Acura ZDX is marginally more expensive to insure, through State Farm, than our 2018 Accord was. And we have very good coverage.

If someone were to steal your phone and the Tesla you do not need to unlock the phone for the bluetooth unlock to work. However, the owner can call Tesla and the car can be tracked and/or disabled by them after proper verification of the owner.
I had a mixup in updating a lost credit card for Supercharging and my passenger called the roadside assistance, while I was driving on an Interstate in Nevada. After verifying ID they told me exactly where I was and my speed.
They continued to ask several questions, maybe to verify that it really was me and I wasn’t a hostage or anything similar.
