In another few years, we’ll be able to bring back President Andrew Jackson. I believe he’d feel quite comfortable in current times.

We may need them against the White, errr…Orange Walkers.

Despite all the breathless news coverage, you may not be surprised to learn that the company’s claims are exaggerated. They took a grey wolf, which is only distantly related to the dire wolf, and edited a few genes to make it larger and give it white fur. They made a genetically modified grey wolf. It does seem to be an advance in creating designer mammals but it’s a far cry from resurrecting an extinct species.
Meanwhile WSJ has article today saying China will dominate biotech. I suppose this is because of freeze on NIH grants.
C&EN has article last week saying universities are eating their seed corn. Next years entry level grad students usually get acceptance letters in spring. In science letter usually includes waiver of tuition and modest stipend to cover basic living expenses.
Federal grants provide most of those funds. These entering grad students are a step toward future faculty positions. Next step is post doctoral fellowship. And from there entry level faculty position. They select the best at each stage.
Funding freeze has universities recinding their offers. Reducing number of entry level students. Probably post docs.
C&EN says many rejected will not apply again. So university system will have fewer candidates to do the work and to choose from. Implies that China takes the lead due to better funding.
