I built a dividend calculator to simplify dividend income planning

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share a helpful dividend calculator that is built for real-world use, not just theoretical models.

Most calculators out there assume a lot and let you customize very little. This one is built to be way more flexible and useful for dividend enthusiasts and DIY investors alike.

It’s a work in progress and I’d welcome feedback on your experience and how to improve it.

:key: Key Features:

  • Free to use: No sign up is needed, everyone gets all the same forecasts and features

  • Custom stock and ETF inputs: You can customize a portfolio of securities for US and select international exchanges (80,000+ in total). I saw that most existing calculators only allow you to input an overall single investment amount, so I wanted to ensure this calculator was more useful to forecast values and dividends based on a custom selection of stocks and ETFs. You can enter the total shares and cost for each security.

  • Custom dividend growth rates: You can set custom dividend growth rates at the individual security level, else the calculator defaults to including that specific securities historical dividend growth CAGR.

  • Price growth rates: You can customize price growth rates at the individual security level, or apply a custom growth rate to all holdings in a portfolio.

  • Monthly contributions: The calculator includes an input for additional investment amounts per month, helpful for investors who invest on a schedule or dollar cost average.

  • Custom timeline: Choose a timeline in years to project your portfolio growth and dividend income.

  • Dividend taxation: Apply your own dividend tax rate to understand the impacts of dividend taxation, helpful for tax planning and/or when investing in a tax-advantaged account or taxable brokerage account.

  • DRIP functionality: You can set a portfolio-level DRIP functionality to understand how reinvesting dividends compounds growth over time.

  • Currency selection: While most users are US-based, the calculator has built-in functionality to select your preferred currency (USD, EUR, etc.).

  • Other helpful UX features: You can generate a link to share with others of your custom forecast and there’s also a built in history feature to track recent calculations.

:chart_increasing: Forecast Outputs:

  • Aggregate insights: The calculator outputs several helpful aggregate data points, such as portfolio yield, investment return, annual dividend income, total dividend income, and target date dividend income.

  • Predicted growth charts: The calculator includes two charts to compare portfolio value growth and annual dividend income.

  • Predicted growth table: For users that prefer viewing output results in a table, the calculator includes the same portfolio value growth and annual dividend income values included in the charts.

  • Security forecasts by year: Inside the table, you can select any year to expand and see estimates for each security included in the portfolio. Note: there is a current bug in the Yield on Cost column that results in a NaN% error.

  • Diversification: There is a simple chart that breaks down all holdings in the portfolio by yield and growth.

If you’re into dividend investing or planning for long-term income, I’d love for you to try it out and let me know what you think: https://dividend.watch/dividend-calculator

Let me know if you spot bugs or have feature suggestions — we’re building this for dividend enthusiasts so input does make a difference in shaping the insights.

Happy compounding! :money_with_wings:
