A new study, published in the journal Science Advances, estimates that the McDermitt Caldera, a volcanic crater on the Nevada-Oregon border, harbors a colossal 20 to 40 million metric tons of lithium.

My understanding is that finding lithium isn’t the problem. It’s fairly plentiful. But the mining and initial refining are not friendly to the environment. We’ve been happy so far letting China take that environmental cost. And their labor is cheap.

However, supply chain and security concerns are moving the US to reconsider that decision.
