More Content Dancing Its Way To Disney+

Disney announced that the series, Dancing With The Stars, in which celebrities compete to be named the best ballroom dancer, will exclusively air on Disney+ in the US and Canada starting in the fall. It’s the first live series to debut on the streaming service, and it will no longer appear on ABC.

Kareem Daniel, chairman of Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution, cited “the show’s broad appeal, as well as the overwhelming popularity of its Disney-themed competition nights,” saying the move will help Disney+ “expand our demographic reach.”

Fuskie,

Yeah, I saw an item about that in the news, and I’m still mulling over whether to think that it’s a good move or a bad blunder.

Fans of Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) who also have Disney+ subscriptions won’t care, as it’s neutral to them. But they also won’t affect Disney’s bottom line either way.

And fans of DWTS who don’t have Disney+ subscriptions will have three options: (1) watch the show with friends who have subscriptions, (2) subscribe, or (3) forego watching the show. DWTS is one of the most successful shows on broadcast television, so whatever takes its place on the ABC network probably won’t garner anywhere near the same viewership, ratings, and advertising revenues.

I’m not persuaded that this move will generate enough new subscriptions to Disney+ to offset the loss of revenues at ABC. But we’ll see what happens.

Norm.

Norm, I don’t think the right way to look at Disney+. Yes, there are some marquis content brands, but as is the case of Netflix, few subscribers are going to want to watch just the one show, or be drawn to the service by just one show. It’s the diverse collection of content that makes the service appealing and gives it value.

It is the volume of content and the variety of content that Disney+ offers that will drive subscriptions.

Who notes DWTS recently had a change in hosts, which in some ways make this a perfect time to move it off network television and into the streamingverse…

Fuskie,

Perhaps not.

But Dancing with the Stars clearly is a very popular broadcast program with solid ratings and a very loyal following that brings a LOT of advertising revenue to ABC. If moving the new seasons from ABC to Disney+ does not bring enough increase in the subscriber base to offset the loss of advertising revenue, it’s a net loss to the company.
