This is going to take a very long time, I think. I typical car stays on the road for what, 15-20 years? Therefore the time before they “all communicate a little” is likely to be decades, since none are communicating now.
There will be mixed full, partial, and human driving long before that, but I suspect most of us will be dead before “all” cars are talking to each other and driving in that way becomes fully automated.
It is interesting to speculate that someday traffic lights would become as unnecessary as parking meters and could go away. Cars could decide for themselves when it is appropriate to cross an intersection, no red/yellow/green commands required.
Oh it’ll take many decades. Probably 40-50 years before we see true communicating autonomy as the general case. Maybe longer until we see all the other older cars eliminated.
I think you misunderstood the critique. If the outcome of non-supervised FSD is no ability to exceed the speed limit, then that will be a major deterrent to consumer adoption.
If a consumer can purchase a lvl 4/4.5 autonomous vehicle that allows the “driver” to set the speed, they will be much less likely to purchase a vehicle that lacks that functionality.
