Musk/Starlink recall for Ukraine systems

“Recall” is a term used to denote a defective product, and has a “negative” connotation.

As with many philosphies, Elon Musk is forcing society to adopt a New Paradigm for the word “recall”.
Teslas famously are “recalled” with thousands being “repaired” via OTA (over the air) software updates, with NO MATERIAL IMPACT on the owners. Mainstream media often reports these as “RECALL!” in such a way as to sensationalize on the “negative” connotation of “recall”, without bothering to admit the “recall” is OTA.

In addition, Tesla has upended the traditional “beta test” model, by allowing Tesla OWNERS to log billions (with a B) of miles of driving situations (ie REAL WORLD), for the development of Tesla’s self driving software.

Tesla made Starlink systems available to Ukraine, on March 1 or 2, and sent more systems to Ukraine, to help Ukrainians maintain communication with each other and the outside world.

First, Musk advised the users to be careful, as the units might be targeted by military strikes:

“Important warning: Starlink is the only non-Russian communications system still working in some parts of Ukraine, so probability of being targeted is high. Please use with caution,” Musk wrote on Twitter Thursday (March 3).

“Some Starlink terminals near conflict areas were being jammed for several hours at a time,” Musk wrote in a Twitter statement Friday (March 1). “Our latest software update bypasses the jamming.”

A non government entity, using OTA updates, BYPASSES the jamming efforts? Within just a few hours of being jammed? Thwarting the goals of the aggressors to shut down Ukrainian communication.

Another valuable OTA “recall”?

In addition, Starlink and SpaceX software engineers were “refocused” AWAY from “making money”… to supporting Ukraine.

This “deployment” of Starlink is making the system STRONGER?
And, again, REAL WORLD USE, is making a Musk company better.

ralph owns some TSLA stock. I’ve been resisting becoming a Tesla fanboy. But, when I see this kind of stuff… it’s difficult.

“Our latest software update bypasses the jamming.”

Huh? What?

There are ways to move a small amount of data through a moderate amount of noise, but they’re all variations of shouting more loudly and using hand signals. The noise still wins in preventing normal operations.

I think that the term “recall” for cars is how the NHTSA defines it in that they have only one word to define any product defect or possible defect that the manufacturer puts on a list of things that will be fixed for free.

If NHTSA was also in charge of PCs and phones, then there would be a posted recall notice on them every week or more often.
