New national monument in Oregon, the Owyhee Canyonlands

A National Monument designation would protect the area from the desecration of mining while still providing ranchers with cattle grazing and clean water. Of course, the outgoing administration has to act quickly.

Stunning wilderness country.

One of my great-grandfathers, an Eastern Oregon circuit riding dentist based in Colfax, Washington, who loved hunting and surveying, mapped much of what is now in the monument, and I had the insane good fortune to trek there in the 1970’s with some of my local 2nd cousins.

Weird note is that the strange name Owyhee derives from the fact that its first non-aboriginal explorers were three Hawaiians(!) displaced to USA , Owyheeans, who were working for Canadian fur traders and were killed in the canyonlands.

I seem to remember a statue of Captain Cook in a park in Sydney that said he was killed in Owyhee.
