NHTSA to require automatic braking on all vehicles within 5 years

… says it will add $82 to the price of the average car. That seems really cheap. NHTSA also setting some pretty stiff standards for performance of the braking system.

Subaru started doing this a few years ago so i am shopping for a subaru. As ppl get older this will become more important. As ppl get more distracted driving this will be more important. I agree its about time. Next up breathalyzer for drunk drivers.

Regulation already on the books.

A new federal requirement for all new passenger vehicles to have this safeguard passed as part of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and the deadline could come as soon as 2026.

My BIL was an engineer who worked for one of the big airbag companies. Their pitch was that their airbags worked 100% of time, guaranteed. But that made their airbags cost something like $1.50 than the competition. The manufacturers balked at that, so they had to downgrade to β€œalmost 100% of the time.”
