Will tariffs caused the Great Depression?

The Smoot-Hawley Act increased tariffs on foreign imports to the U.S. by about 20%. Over 25 countries responded by increasing their own tariffs on American goods. Global trade plummeted, contributing to the ill effects of the Great Depression.

The question is not only how our tariffs will affect business and earnings, but how will other nations respond and what will be the impact of that. You can envision round after round of increases as people in one country get creative and prompt a more extreme response from the affected nation.

I think we all hope tariffs are mostly a negotiating tool rather than true policy,

Scwab account shows it down 1.5% after hours. So no fireworks.

As far as tariffs, I doubt that other Country’s do not know that Trump is a blowhard, and runs all kinds of nonsense out of his mouth. So I’m skeptical that the “great negotiator” is going to scare our trading partners into compliance.
Trump bankrupted casinos, the surest sure thing in the world of capitalism, and this is the guy voters want running the Country. Hold on to your hat ( and your wallet )

On the other hand, his cronies want to see the income tax gone, at least for themselves, so dumping the revenue load on the Proles, with tariffs (and corresponding profit protection for USian producers) is attractive.

Yes, share price is little changed from the opening price today.

There were wild rumors they were going to miss their numbers. Price expected to fall below $100. That clearly did not happen. They did have difficult comps from last year but still beat them. Not a blow out but very solid numbers. Earnings continue to grow.
