Oh thank goodness

I am so glad this board is not on the chopping block.

ThyPeace, at least one of the boards that has meant a lot to me is staying!

This is considered a financial board.

I guess the TMF powers that be never read Vicki Robin’s book and therefore, don’t understand that your money is supposed to facilitate your life?

Cleaning up and remodeling this rather crusty hulk of a community is long overdue. I’m glad for that part. I think the marketing of it sucks, which doesn’t really surprise me for this place. Community engagement is really not what it used to be. (I miss Twitty. And Tony. And all the rest of that gang.)

I would love it if this board, and some of the others that remain, can return to be really useful for large numbers of people. This, LBYM, and some of the (VERY) basic investing boards are the ones that can help the most people.

ThyPeace, fewer boards of higher quality would be great. One or two “rest of life” boards should also exist.

AJ, I cannot speak to the thought process because I was not in the room where it happened.

ThyPeace, I think this board is what we make of it. I can only surmise that Fools stopped posting their debt problems here because they felt self-conscious about discussing them. Unfortunately, I don’t think it is because people stopped having debt problems.

CMF_Fuskie,

I think this board is basically dead because TMF doesn’t advertise the fact that they offer free message boards. Anyone going to the TMF home page is up-sold services. There are no links here that I’m aware of. It’s been that way for years. That means the population of free board users is pretty stagnant.

I’ve assumed that was intentional, so I’ve mostly moved to posting on related Facebook boards instead of here.

Besides, if you’ve been a member and aware of these boards for years, it’s unlikely you’re going to come here and post your financial woes at this late date. Most people that remain are probably pretty financially savvy so they’d probably migrate to other message boards.

I cannot speak to the thought process because I was not in the room where it happened.

And apparently, neither were any members of the community (as opposed to TMF employees). But whatever, it’s a done decision. And the TMF community will continue to shrink and have to rely more and more on subscription revenues because the ad revenues will continue to decrease - leading to more reliance on subscription services, until the free boards are just eliminated, and TMF relies entirely on subscription fees.

It’s similar to an oft-discussed problem in business school, where fixed costs allocated across segments of a business make certain segments look unprofitable. When looking to cut costs, the business cuts those segments, thus resulting in the fixed cost allocations for the remaining segments increasing. Lather, rinse, repeat, until you get down to one segment which is allocated 100% of the fixed costs, and you shutter that one because it’s unprofitable.

I just wonder how long it will be until TMF shuts down completely.

Joel, there’s been no intentional plan to minimize or reduce the free boards. But you are correct that the company markets to its paid services rather than promoting its free services. But there are other freemium community discussion boards that get plenty of activity as well as new participants, so I think that if people wanted to find their way here, they could.
