On Tactical Nuclear War

The LA Times has a short article on the options the world has if Putin begins using tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

Here’s the missing link.

Putin continues to use our fear of a nuclear war against us. It makes headlines routinely and Western leaders cower in the shadows for fear of criticism.

Putin uses this against us on every aspect including providing weapons to support the Ukranian effort to defend themselves.

Its doubtful that Putin thinks he can win a nuclear war. He is probably bluffing. But he is willing to push the envelope as far as Western powers allow.

If he crosses the red line, will we actually use our nuclear weapons or will we hesitate and make excuses? Putin is willing to take that gamble. Are they taking odds in Las Vegas? 70/30 we decide to hesitate (again).

It’s not automatic that we’d respond with nukes.

Putin would confirm his place in history right beside Hitler if he (Putin) used an A bomb.

Aside from making a bigger hole in the ground than anybody else the tactical advantage of an A bomb isn’t all that great.

However, the whole world would abhor the crossing of that red line.

I would expect to see all of the western powers unite to smack down the little pipsqueak for crossing the red line.

On the other hand, if rumors are true, Putin is dying so he may not care if he obtains radioactive immortality*!*

To surmise; if Putin used an A bomb he would be squashed like the bug that he is and his subordinates know it. I doubt they’d want to go down with the crazy man.

If Putin does a Pearl Harbor type mistake, there will be war.

Anything less than that is fair game. Both sides continue to escalate essentially harassing the other side.

Will tactical nuclear weapons or poison gas or biological weapon trigger a major response? Doubtful. Putin knows that someone in our alliance will object and our response will falter.

One would hope we have an array of increasingly severe counter attack measures (rather than mere sanctions). Perhaps we will learn what they are.

Cyber response seems likely. Weapons for more cross the border attacks on shipping or oil or ammunitions storage. Better missile defense. Blockade of the Black Sea or Baltic?

If he crosses the red line, will we actually use our nuclear weapons or will we hesitate and make excuses?

If he decides to cross the line … will his generals take him out?
