Options wash sale question

Hi, folks! I can never remember the answer to this question. I suppose I should write it down somewhere…

If I am assigned shares from a short put option and then immediately sell the assigned shares, is that considered a wash sale? Do I have to wait the 31 days before selling the assigned shares? I’m thinking “no”, but I know there are tax experts on this board.

If the answer is “Yes, it’s a wash sale”, then what about if I sell a weekly call against those shares, and the call gets exercised, calling away the shares before 31 days have elapsed?

Thank you!

Bruce

With the assumption that you have no other position in the underlying, my understanding is that closing the position will not result in a wash sale as long as you do not create a new position in the following 31 days from the sale.
