Gail Halvorsen, the former US pilot who thought up the idea of dropping tiny improvised parachutes loaded with sweets for children into Berlin during the Soviet blockade, has died at the age of 101.
I learned about this guy a few days ago when I watched a documentary about the DC-3. The DC-3 first flew in 1935 & put in service in 1936.
The documentary commented about a Wisconsin outfit that rebuilds DC-3s airframes & re-engines with turbo props. I imagine there are other concerns that are in the same business.
