OT -- How the handle a passenger who takes your assigned airline seat?

From Quora:

I paid to reserve a seat on a plane but a woman sat in it and refused to move when cabin crew directed her to do so. What should I expect from the airline? And what is likely to happen to the woman?

Back in the late ‘90s, on a continental U.S. flight, I had this happen to me, and sure, I could have spoken to a flight attendant - but I liked my plan better.

My flight was underbooked, so I sat a couple of rows behind the Karen to keep an eye on her.

About 30 minutes into our two-and-a-half-hour flight, she got up to use the lavatory. Once she was in, I moved to her seat.

When she came back, she told me to get out of “her” seat. I showed her my ticket, proving it was actually my assigned seat, and told her she must have gotten confused after returning from the lavatory.

She called the flight attendant, and when she was done making her complaint, the flight attendant asked to see my ticket.

I showed it to her while pointing at the assigned seat number, and I mentioned that the lady appeared to be confused and lost when she was walking back from the lavatory.

I suggested that she may be experiencing a medical emergency, and they said begging her to the back of the plane, so they could more easily monitor her condition.

The seat- swiping passenger became irate, and would not calm down..or even sit down for the rest of the flight - despite protests from flight attendants, she even stood during landing

There were police waiting for her at the gate when we deplaned.

I had a connecting flight to catch—otherwise, I would’ve stuck around to see if she ended up in handcuffs. }}

I have been in this situation twice.

The first time, I sat on the wrong side of a wide-body 747 next to a beautiful young woman. A man came a long for his seat and said don’t worry about it. He sat elsewhere. I was 18 years old and I did date that young 20s woman after the flight.

The next time I politely let the person know and they moved. It was an innocent mistake. I was with family and we wanted to be in the same section of the plane.
