OT: Keep a tire pump available

I don’t know if this will turn into a big thing, but a disturbing activist trend has apparently arrived from the UK. The activists deflate the tires of SUVs and other vehicles they don’t like.

U.K.-based activist group called “The Tyre Extinguishers” has landed in the U.S. and claims they’ve deflated tires on dozens of SUVs in several major cities, including New York, Chicago, and the Bay Area. The group, which says the thirsty SUVs significantly contribute to climate change, has no official leadership but encourages independent participation through social media and offers a hallmark note to be left on the victims’ cars.

Also…
The Tyre Extinguishers website shares guides on how to spot an SUV and how to deflate its tires safely. Specific instructions are given to target “posh/middle-class areas” that are more likely to feature these vehicles. Hybrid and electric vehicles are considered “fair game,” as well, with the group citing the high environmental costs of producing and running these large vehicles.

I’ve kept a portable compressor or tire pump in the car for a number of years. You can get a fairly inexpensive compressor from an automotive supply store, but I have never been very happy with the quality, so they don’t last very long. As with most things, you get what you pay for.

Hmmm. ‘How to spot an SUV’

By the way, for $7 you can buy a set of four locking stem valve caps.

Criminals should be in jail…

The Captain
always had a pump in the trunk of his car and sometimes an additional spare tire, very useful driving in the wilderness (Venezuelan Outback?). On one occasion we had to jury rig the leaf spring on a Dodge Dart (fishing spears, galvanized chain). Amazing what you can find in The Captain’s car’s trunk. On the return trip we blew four tires on two Dodge Darts and bent the rims. We had enough equipment to make it home unaided. Cars with magnesium wheels had to wait 'til morning for the tow trucks to arrive.

A bridge on the main road had washed out and the detour had a giant unlit, unmarked pothole at least two or three feet wide and quite deep, a tire buster! This happened before mobile phones.

We rented a car for two weeks in Malta long ago. The 4 tires were obviously rotten but we had a good spare tire.

Drove over a blind hump in the road and hit the pothole from hell on the other side blowing both front tires. A nice lady came over to asked if we were OK. I asked her to call the car rental company and ask them to bring two tires. They showed up an hour or more later and put two equally rotten looking tires on the car.

We really liked Malta, a massive history lesson going back ~ 9,000 years.

If I caught them in the act, they would be taking a detour to the ER first.
