OT;This could be payback for the ugly buildings

The Slovakian Government has expelled 3 Russian diplomats accused of spying: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/slovakia-expels-3-russi…

After 40 years of Russian occupation the capital, Bratislava, has a small but nice old town and a bunch of big ugly concrete Russian built monstrosities.

P.S. They also have a small restaurant named after Laurel and Hardy called Stanley’s plus a UFO bridge.

I don’t know specifically which buildings you are referring to, but I believe that style is called brutalism, or brutalist architecture.

The link above says the style was first developed in the UK, but it was certainly also adopted in the old Soviet Union, as well as plenty of buildings in the US.

I Googled “Bratislava brutalism”, and clicked on Images. One of the featured buildings appears to be an upside-down pyramid. I wonder what sort of statement they were trying to make with that?

The Chavez Revolution built some Russian low coat housing in Caracas and are they ugly. Not only that, the don’t meet the established construction regulations, for example, they don’t have any parking spaces.

Pete,

Thank’s as I couldn’t remember the specific term but it was pointed out to us both in our visits to Slovakia and Budapest, Hungary. Both the Germans and the Russians destroyed many old buildings belonging to the Jewish populations and used the empty space for these horrible blocks of concrete.
