paid the IRS twice

It seems that the IRS took out our owed taxes twice this morning, and I’m trying to figure out what will happen with that second payment. I think what happened is that I set it up via TT to come out directly, and then when I did not see the withdrawal on Friday, which is when I thought it would happen, I scheduled it again via EFTPS. It’s a pretty significant payment, and we had it in the account, but I’m wondering what they will do with that second payment. Will they refund it at some point? Will they keep it and I just don’t make the July estimated payment (the amounts are virtually the same)? Do I need to take any action?

This was the first year that TT would let you schedule the payment, and that clearly confused me.

So what do I do now?

Actually, TurboTax has allowed you to schedule your Federal and State tax payments for years. I think that I started doing that over 15 years ago.

2gifts,

I am not sure how Turbo Tax Schedules these but, I would check at IRS.Gov.
If Turbo tax just schedules your payments to the IRS for you, then you may be able to edit or reschedule them there. If you have an account there log in and look at your future payments. If they show quarterly payments there you should be able to edit them and or delete one. You cannot change one that was paid.

I do not know if EFTPS site shows those turbo tax scheduled payments, would check there also.

If you can’t see them on either site then TurboTax Support to see if they can cancel any future scheduled payments.

I don’t know about this, but I do know that I can see both payments taken out of our checking account this morning, so the money has already gone to the IRS.

I had already checked EFTPS, and it just shows the one that I had scheduled. It does not show the duplicate payment.

I don’t have any future payments scheduled. I schedule each one as it becomes due.

So my problem at this point is that my 2021 taxes owed were withdrawn by the IRS twice. I have already paid the estimated taxes that were due today as well. I don’t know if they will return that duplicate payment, or if there is a way for it to be credited as my July estimated tax payment. It is coincidental that the estimated taxes due are $4 less than the two duplicate payments taken out to fulfill the 2021 tax liability.

So I’m still left wondering what happens to that second payment.

Since they both posted as 2021 payments , then hopefully the IRS will catch this quickly and adjust your overpayment and refund you the amount. You might have to wait until the return is processed to see this.

You can see your 2021 tax return archive at IRS.GOV after it is processed.
The IRS may be a bit slow, but they usually get it all corrected once it is processed.

I was mistaken in thinking you had signed up for estimated 2022 payments thru TT.

Best of luck in getting it squared away.

I didn’t think to check the account on irs.gov. We do have one of those.

At least neither payment bounced as I always have them come out of DH’s business account, and there’s always plenty of money in there. I guess that’s good and bad since because I keep a lot in there, they were able to take out that second payment.

I will go check to see when our return has been processed and see what it says about payments.

Patience with the IRS is needed. Payments are processed much faster than returns even e-filed returns are processed. The check we mailed with the 1040-V cleared ahead of our return being processed.

“In most cases, the IRS will automatically refund the extra payment as long as both payments were clearly marked for the same tax year and the taxpayer does not owe any additional funds for other years. It may take a bit of time, especially under current conditions, to see the refund.”

Just circling back on this one to give everyone an update. A check from the IRS for the overpayment amount arrived in today’s mail. I’d say that’s pretty quick. I paid the duplicate on April 18, so it’s just 2 weeks later that I have received the overpayment back.
