Plants emit organics that signal neighboring plants to begin defenses per new study

They studied Scots pine seedings and found they emitted monoterpenes such as alpha-pinene when attacked by largepine weevils. These are monoterpenes often found in turpentine. The implication is plants can be made more resistant to attack by exposure to vapors of natural chemicals. Much more study is no doubt required but could have important commercial implications.

Turpentine was once a common paint solvent and lamp fuel. Today it is usually purified and converted into resins or flavor ingredients.
