If you dig down to GDP growth in California, the fastest growth in recent years is driven by the expansion of state govt spending.
CA per capita GDP growth has led other large states and the US overall over the last 15 years.
But maybe we can find a particular time frame or metric that shows something slightly worse.
Good point. Here are the GDP CAGRs for different time periods. California essentially matches the national growth rate for the longer periods (with a surge from 2010 to 2015) but has lagged since 2019.
GDP CAGR Since USA Calif 2019 6.2% 5.0% 2015 5.5 5.6 2010 4.9 5.2 2005 4.4 4.4 2000 4.5 4.3

This thread turned lame. Sports teams are succesful because of their fan base. Tax incentives might be a short-term draw, fans matter. GDP has little impact, crime even less so.
Successful sports franchises have strong fan bases, period. It’s not a complicated issue. Portland teams struggle because their fan base is weak. It’s not because of taxes, or crime, or rainy weather, or local government. Seattle teams will succeed because they have a strong fan base.
Per-person real gdp was over 50% higher in CA vs US over the last 20 years (would be even higher against US ex-CA).
Kind of not a small difference.
Anyway, I’m sure their tax policy makes it terrible and sports franchises avoid states like this.
But one can be 1/3 poorer living someplace else.
