Years ago, I read the same. A shotgun, a box of matches, and a bag of old worn silver dimes. If you trade in gold, you may not get your ‘change’ back. Booze, tobacco, and chocolate would be valuable, too.
More likely is that you would get your change back in the form of lead … so they can check your pockets for more of those gold coins.

It’s all going to charities - no one gave me a bean and coming from where I did it toughened me up no end.

So there is indeed a third party that knows where it is hidden. That’s roughly equivalent to “counterparty risk” … if the well being of that third party, or that third party’s loved ones, are at risk, which would they choose, your stuff they know about or saving themselves?
