Lots more, with a spouse. You can each have an individual account with $250k protection. ($500k). Plus you can have a joint account, each with $250k protection (another $500k). And you can have Trust accounts and play similar games, with multiple unique beneficiaries and insure $1.25m (as of last year) and some banks which will spread it for you among a network with CDARS (Certificate of Deposit Account Registry Service) or ICS (Insured Cash Sweep) which will do the legwork for you but still give you a single entity to deal with. So the amount is virtually unlimited unless you’re Bezos or Musk or something.
