One other point about Roku is how you can search for shows across different providers. It will search Netflix, Prime, HBO, Showtime, ESPN, NBC, CBS, ABC, etc, etc. for the show you’re looking for. For example, if you searched for “Game of Thrones” on Amazon Prime, you wouldn’t have found it. But if you searched for it on your Roku TV, it would have instantly told you what time GOT would be on HBO.

Similarly, if you search for an old show like “Parks and Recreation”, it will tell you the 4 different content providers that have syndicated it, and you can watch the show that is on the soonest.

So Roku is a neutral search portal for TVs and movies, and could become the #1 such portal. As shown by Google’s success, advertisers love dominant search portals.

Roku is clearly after the advertising dollars of the cord cutter era, which is projected to double to $20B next year. TTD is also in this market, but offers a different product - a neutral analytics platform that helps advertisers target which channels to place their ads on. Roku, on the other hand, takes a cut of all ads that are shown on it.

I see both companies dominating their niches.
