Russian debt default

What is the difference between a Ruble and a Dollar? A Dollar!

Russia has a $114 million dollar interest a payment due today on its bond debt but it has no dollars as its accounts are frozen.

Russia actually has two dates on the debt payment. The first is today which places it in a so called soft default and then there is a 30 day grace period before a hard, or permanent default.

I wonder if they could pay in gold?

Why would they pay at all. The money they were going to pay with was stolen by the people who want to get paid.

It would be me, I would be saying here’s a dime, call
someone who cares.

Now that is really interesting. “We did not default because you already have our dollars, just in the wrong bank accounts, your problem not mine”. It’s not an argument that will fly, of course. But that has not stopped them so far.

Right. That’s called default.

Qazulight nailed it!

Russia makes a $117 debt payment today, but it used funds that were seized overseas. By us.
